Mohammed Kudus: “Ghana Must Qualify at All Costs” Ahead of Decisive Comoros Clash

Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus has issued a rallying call to his teammates ahead of Sunday’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Comoros, insisting that the Black Stars must qualify “at all costs.”

Otto Addo’s men sit at the top of Group I and need just a single point to confirm their fifth appearance at the World Cup, which will be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The match takes place at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 12, where a full house is expected to witness Ghana’s final push toward qualification.

We Have to Qualify at All Costs

In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Kudus said the team’s primary objective is to clearly win and seal their spot.

“Obviously, AFCON is one of the major tournaments the country loves, and not qualifying was a big disappointment,” he said. “But the full focus now is on the World Cup qualifiers. We have to qualify at all costs. I think we are on the right path now.”

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder described playing for Ghana as a unique privilege and emotional experience.

“Representing your country is a one time thing; it comes with the biggest emotion for me. Wearing that jersey means everything, and it comes with pride and responsibility,” he noted.

Lessons from the Past, Motivation for the Future

Kudus reflected on Ghana’s celebrated 2010 World Cup run in South Africa, when the Black Stars reached the quarterfinals and came within inches of becoming Africa’s first semifinalists.

“In 2010, we went all the way to the quarterfinals. I believe this squad can do even more than that. But first, we have to qualify, then we can focus on the tournament itself.”

Ghana’s recent performances have been impressive, with seven wins, one draw, and one defeat from nine matches, a record that keeps them atop the group with 19 points heading into the final fixture.

Form and Momentum

After a commanding 5–0 win over the Central African Republic in Morocco, the team returns home with confidence high. Addo’s squad has shown improved chemistry, cleaner finishing, and a stronger defensive shape over recent fixtures.

The settled core, a reliable goalkeeper, disciplined defence, and balanced midfield have allowed the forwards to express themselves. Kudus, in particular, has been central to Ghana’s creative spark, combining ball progression with goals and assists in key moments.

Comoros: Cautious but Dangerous

Sunday’s opponents, Comoros, head into the tie with little to lose but plenty of pride to play for. The Coelacanths famously stunned Ghana at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, a reminder that underestimating them would be costly.

Comoros’ compact defence and quick counterattacks could test Ghana’s patience in front of their home fans. However, the Black Stars’ record at home, particularly in decisive qualifiers, remains formidable.

Addo’s Tactical Approach

Head coach Otto Addo is expected to stick with the same attacking trio that delivered in Morocco. Jordan Ayew will likely lead the line, supported by Kudus, Thomas Partey, and Kamaldeen Sulemana, who scored his debut international goal last week.

Addo has urged his players to stay composed and treat the match as a final.

“We have to manage every moment like a cup tie,” he said earlier this week. “Take our chances, stay organized, and finish strong.”

Beyond Qualification

With the 2026 World Cup expanding to 48 teams, Africa now has nine automatic slots, and Ghana is eager to be among them. Kudus emphasized that qualification would not only boost national pride but also align with Ghana’s broader sporting and commercial ambitions.

“Qualifying brings visibility and unity for the country, at home and across the diaspora,” he said. “It’s more than football; it’s a national mission.”

As Sunday approaches, anticipation builds in Accra. Win, and Ghana will celebrate another ticket to the world’s biggest football stage. Avoid defeat, and the dream is still alive, but for Kudus and millions of fans, the message is simple: no excuses, no slip-ups, just qualification.
