UP Plus General Secretary Praises Mahama’s “Mature and Deliberate” Leadership Style

The General Secretary of the newly formed United Party (UP Plus) has commended President John Dramani Mahama for taking a more mature and deliberate approach to governance than in his previous term.

The UP Plus official said the president’s leadership style has evolved significantly since returning to office after the 2028 elections.

According to him, Mahama has become more strategic and measured in his decision-making.

“This is not President Mahama of 10 years ago. He has matured. He’s deliberate in his decision making, and he’s trying to plan. There’s no doubt about it. He has changed. His governance style has changed,” he said.

He added that the president now appears to take a long-term, structured view of national policy rather than short-term fixes.

The UP Plus General Secretary noted that while 10 months is not enough to fully judge a government, the President’s early actions point toward a more thoughtful and inclusive approach.

He cited the administration’s renewed fight against illegal mining (galamsey) and the inclusion of technocrats and civil society figures in key government roles as evidence of change.

“Sustainable transformation cannot be assessed in 10 months,” he explained. “In that time, all you can do is make your appointments, develop some action plans, and try to deliver on some things. Already, you can see the difficulties with galamsey and a couple of other things.”

He further praised the president for building a team based on competence rather than political loyalty, describing it as a major departure from past leadership styles.

“He’s tried to reach out into civil society, into other places,” he said. “He’s trying to populate his government with competence and minds rather than just loyalty.”

The UP Plus executive added that this shift could help strengthen public trust in government and improve service delivery.

Lessons from a Decade Away

President Mahama returned to power after winning the 2024 general elections, marking his comeback after a decade out of office. During that time, he served as a statesman, speaker, and continental advocate on democracy and development.

The UP Plus General Secretary believes that Mahama’s years outside government helped him reflect and learn. “It really shows that staying at home for 10 years, he studied and he’s learned,” he said.

He described this “second phase” of Mahama’s leadership as a period of calm reflection, guided by experience and a better understanding of Ghana’s institutional challenges.

Political analysts say the remarks from the UP Plus leader highlight growing recognition among observers that Mahama’s administration has taken a more measured approach to governance this time. Since assuming office, the President has emphasised economic discipline, youth empowerment, and national dialogue as pillars of his new agenda.

In recent months, the government has also introduced reforms in the energy and mining sectors, while calling for greater public accountability in service delivery.

While challenges remain, particularly in tackling illegal mining and restoring confidence in local governance, the administration’s tone has been widely described as steady and inclusive.

The UP Plus General Secretary’s comments come amid renewed discussions about leadership renewal and political maturity in Ghana. He urged Ghanaians to give the president more time to implement his policies. “But the signs are there. This is a more deliberate and focused President Mahama.”
