Daddy Lumba’s Family Responds to Wife’s Reported Court Injunction Over Funeral

The family of late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba, known in private life as Charles Kwadwo Fosu, has responded to reports that the musician’s wife, Akosua Serwaa, has filed a court injunction to halt preparations for his upcoming funeral.

Speaking in an interview with Tony Best on Akoma FM in Kumasi, Victor Kofi Owusu Boahene, head of the late singer’s family, clarified that all proper traditional and legal procedures were followed before publicly announcing plans for the burial and final funeral rites.

Funeral Date and Venue Confirmed

According to Kofi Owusu, the family has set December 6, 2025, for the final funeral ceremony, which will take place in Kumasi. He explained that while early reports suggested the funeral might be held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, the family has decided to hold the event at Heroes Park, located near the same venue, for logistical and traditional reasons.

“We have officially fixed the date, and preparations are ongoing,” he confirmed. “The family has not violated any custom. Everything has been done in line with Ashanti tradition.”

He added that the family created a social media platform to coordinate funeral activities among members and to ensure transparency in planning.

Visits to Dignitaries

The family head revealed that in keeping with Ghanaian custom, courtesy visits were paid to notable figures, including President John Dramani Mahama and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to formally inform them of the family’s intentions.

“We have respected all traditional processes,” Kofi Owusu said. “We’ve even informed Otumfuo and other elders about the arrangements.”

He emphasized that these steps were meant to honour the legacy of Daddy Lumba, whose music touched millions across Ghana and beyond.

No Official Injunction Received

Addressing reports that Akosua Serwaa, the widow of the late musician, had sought a court injunction to stop the funeral, Kofi Owusu maintained that the family had not received any official legal notice confirming such an order.

“For us, we have not gone to court to see whether there is an injunction,” he said. “There is no injunction on the funeral. We would have been summoned if it were true. Since the court hasn’t called us, we cannot accept that it is true.”

He described the ongoing media reports as speculative until the family is formally served by the court.

Widowhood Rites at the Centre of Dispute

Later in the interview, however, Kofi Owusu acknowledged that there are internal disagreements regarding the performance of widowhood rites, a key component of traditional funerals.

He explained that Akosua Serwaa’s objection relates to the inclusion of Daddy Lumba’s other partner, popularly known as Odo Broni, in the rites.

“The injunction relates to the widowhood rites matter,” he explained. “It is about the issues between the wives. She insists on being the sole participant in performing the rites. However, Ashanti tradition dictates that all women legally married to the deceased are entitled to take part.”

Kofi Owusu disclosed that his personal inquiries confirmed that Odo Broni was legally married to the late musician before his death.

The family head urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation, saying certain individuals might be “working behind the scenes” to cause division within the family.

“We are aware that some people are trying to create confusion. But we are united as a family and will follow the right process until the funeral is peacefully held,” he said.
